When a large rainstorm hits, it is important that you have a gutter system that works properly. If your home’s roof is having problems removing water from your roof, it is important that you check on your downspouts to see if they are clogged. Properly cleaning your downspouts will provide you with protection against flooding and water damage problems that can easily arise when gutters and downspouts are not effectively removing water.
Remove Leaves Often
One of the biggest problems that people see with downspouts is having leaves, twigs, and other debris that clogs them. If you are not cleaning off your roof in the fall, it is possible that you will end up having problems with debris that clogs up your gutters and downspouts. Simply go on the roof with a small shovel and gloves to start cleaning the leaves off the roof. Upon removal of the leaves, use a power washer to spray out the gutters. This will remove excess mud and other debris that may easily get stuck when colder weather hits.
Use an Auger
Since downspouts can become clogged, it can difficult to properly clean them. In order to get down the spout to clean it out, use an auger. An auger will allow you to clear out the obstructions that are in the way. Never stick your hand down the downspout as your hand can become lodged in the downspout.
Clean the Gutters Correctly
While a power washer can work effectively to remove dirt, there are some instances where dirt could be hardened against the gutter system and it is difficult to remove. A small garden shovel can work well to break up the hard clumps and remove them. Another great way to remove dirt is by using a wire scrubber. These also help to properly smooth out the inside of the gutter walls, making it easier for the rainwater to properly pass through the gutters and to the downspouts.
Trim your Trees
Always trim back your trees so you do not have tree limbs that are hanging on the roof or pressing against the gutters. This can cause them to crack and actually pull away from the home due to the heaviness of the branches and the leaves.
Install Mesh Over the Gutters
If you live in an area where you tend to have a lot of leaves, it may be a wise idea to consider installing mesh over your gutters. This will prevent the leaves from getting inside your gutters and clogging them but it still allows the water to pass through. You will still want to go up and clean off the leaves and debris annually but this is at least one additional way to limit the amount of cleaning you will need to do. There are many companies that are offering gutter covers and guards. These work well at allowing the water to pass through and keeping the leaves out of the gutters so they cannot clog the downspouts. There are many companies that can install such guards over your gutters and they can also secure downspouts that may be loose.
